Kitty sat on a stiff chair, her green eyes taking in every aspect of her new environment. She had made sure her make-up coordinated perfectly with her black, teal and brown striped top and black dress pants, and silver jewelry dangled from her neck and wrists. She had taken a straightening iron to her wavy brown hair, and black eyeliner was carefully drawn across her bottom eyelid. Black mascara made her lashes full and elegant, curtaining her eyes. Rouge brought color to her cheeks, and if there were any blemishes on her face, it had been expertly concealed with foundation.
She fidgeted with her hair and the draw string of her shirt, waiting anxiously for her name to be called out by the secretary. The clock that was mounted on the wall seemed to move so slow, that Kitty checked her cell phone to see if it the clock was wrong. She crossed and uncrossed her legs at least five or six times, and breathed deeply to keep her nerves down. Why was she so nervous? It was just a new school, nothing big...but it was big, it was a whole new change in Kitty's life. It was what she hoped to be the turning point in her previously screwed up life.
Finally, after what seemed like ages, the door of the office opened to reveal the smiling face of the secretary. She asked Kitty her name, to which she responded "Catherine Brookes..." and then the secretary nodded, and admitted her into the office. Kitty stood, adjusted her shirt and necklace, and strode through the door.

Lub, the headmaster and founder of Yorkwood was puttering arond in his office, doing a lot of nothing - replying to students' emails for appointments to discuss what was going on in their lives, debating with the cafeteria people about the lack of a salad bar - was it really worth it? And finally all of that garbage was out of the way so he could do what he did best - take care of the students in his school, and first on that agenda? Welcome a new student - Catherine Brookes to the school. So, he paged his secretary to let the girl in, and is she came in he put on his best grin and welcomed her with a warm handshake/bearhug combination - Lub was a very outgoing man.
"Hello Catherine!" Lub said, beaming, "Welcome to Yorkwood. We do hope that you'll enjoy your stay here - come, sit, sit." He gestured towards a chair for the girl, then continued his babble "According to your file, you'll be staying here for the rest of high school - unless unforeseen circumstances come up - hope you enjoy the trip. In a moment, you'll meet your sponsor, Marlene Malone, and she'll show you through the school - but first you have to choose your house! We have four houses here - Yukon, the social ones, Churchill, the smart ones, Grande, the artsy ones and Frasier, the sporty ones - the choice is yours! So go on, choose!" Lub was grinning - this was always his favourite part - students choosing their house. It always gave away so much about their character...

Kitty entered the office, and her eyebrows rose almost immediately at his enthusiastic welcome. She was caught completely off guard at the hug, and her eyes grew slightly wider. What a strange man! Her last headmaster would just glare, and if you were lucky, not look at you at all. Kitty finally collected herself, and forged a smile on her face. She sat when she was instructed to, and listen to the man's words. She wasn't too thrilled about the sponsor, but she'd go along with it. Oh, how exciting, she was to choose a house.
Churchill...Hmm, her grades were never bad, but she definitely was not one of those suck-up, goody-two-shoes kids. She couldn't draw or paint to save her life, although she did enjoy photography..Sports never Lub deemed social. Still a little frazzled by the friendly nature of her new headmaster, she stumbled over her words for a moment when she responded. "Um... I think I'd best fit in the Yukon house, sir.." She flashed a smile at the end to make up for her lacking in the intelligent way she tried to use when speaking to important figures.

Lub grinned as Catherine choose her house "Good choice, good choice" he said happily, still with that over-excited, yet goofy smile on his face. He did like many of the kids in Yukon - the were always the more friendly ones in the hallways, greeting him with a hug when they saw him. That's what Lub loved most about the school - how everyone could get along easily in the school - they were really one big community more than a school. "Well now that that's overwith, you can go meet your sponsor, Marlene. She should be waiting for you outside - she's a good kid. You'll like her." With that, Lub ushered Catherine out of his office, and resumed debating the salad bar.
Marlene Malone, more commonly referred to as Marz, sat outside Lub's office, chewing gum - as always. She was on a lot less of an edge for meeting this sponsor-ee than she was for her last one, Phil. Although that wasn't meant to be an insult to Phil - Just now this "Catherine" was to be her second sponser-ee rather than her first, so she kind of knew what to do now. Kind of. Marz looked at the clock above the secretary's desk, trying to figure out what was taking Lub so long. She pushed her navy-blue rimmed glasses higher up her nose, so that her blue-grey eyes could actually see the time read on the clock I should only have to wait another minute or two... Marz thought, and she went back to being impatient, now with the addition of crossing her arms and tapping her foot against the ground in addition to compulsive gum-chewing.... After what seemed like an eon, the door to Lub's office opened and out came a girl her age. "Hi!" Marz said with her signature perkiness, quickly swallowing her gum lest Lub saw through the crack in the door "I'm Marlene - your sponsor, and you must be Catherine, right?" Marz extended her hand out for a shaking, hoping that Catherine would shake it - leaving a hand out awkwardly was always well, awkward.

Kitty smiled at Lub's response to her house. She nodded when he named her sponsor. She stood, thanked him and left the office as he had obviously wanted her to do. She carefully shut the door behind her, and turned to face this girl, "Marlene", who was to be her sponsor.
She looked friendly, and Kitty smiled at her. She hated being called Catherine, but this girl couldn't have known that. Even so, Kitty felt a pang of irritation at the name. "Kitty's fine, or Cat, if you like." She said. She took Marlene's hand and shook it, almost grinning as she noted Marlene doubting if she'd shake it or not. She had been taught to make a firm handshake and keep eye contact. She kept eye contact, although her handshake was only semi-firm. She was still a little flustered, but she tried to look calm. She couldn't tell if it worked or not.

Marz smiled at the girl "Well, since we're on a nickname baises now, I'd prefer to be called Marz, or Marzly. It's just that Marlene sounds way too 1970s for me. I don't know what my parents were thinking. Anyways..." Marz had this habit of over-saying some words to make them sound so much more important than they were. The fact that that's how words worked in sarcasm and Marz spoke sarcasm more than than she speaks anything else might be part of it, but still.
"Anyways, I'm supposed to be doing a whole bunch of things with you right now - the whole "get to know you thing" which my last sponsor-ee and I kindof skipped, so I don't really know how that works - a tour of the school, kindof lame, but I try to make it a bit more interesting, which is hard, and then I have to help you choose your courses! It's all super-duper fun. And by that I mean it's not. So what do you want to start with?"
Marz began to lead Kitty out of the office's anti-chamber and once they were out of it, she rummaged through her purse and extracted a stick of gum, which she promptly popped in her mouth "Want a piece?" she asked. "Technically, we aren't allowed to chew it - rule number one, but most teachers don't care as long as you give them a piece if you have extra - Lub's really the only guy that cares."

Kitty laughed at her name issue. Kitty's name just seemed too elegant and perfect for her personality. "Yeah, I totally understand that." She grinned, trying to avoid laughter as Marz went on about what they were supposed to do.
"Well, we can 'get to know each other' along the way. We might as well start with the tour. I'm terrible with learning to get around places, so that will probably help." She listened to her speak again, and couldn't help grinning at Marz's sarcasm, and responded "Sure!" to the gum offer. She herself was an active chewer, although she could care less about the rules. She never listened to them anyway...it was a bad 'habit', I suppose.

"Oh, I hear you. I totally got lost last year here without knowing my way around - and that was before the sponsor program. I got so lost going pretty much everywhere, you're lucky you have me, as lame as it may seem that you need a "sponsor". I think we need a cooler name for us..." Marz began to babble as she handed Kitty a piece of gum, and blew a bubble with her own piece of gum. Marz began to lead Kitty around the school, pointing out the different classrooms and the water fountains as the "cold" fountain and the "warm" one.
"Soooo Kitty, we're touring now and that means we get to start our get to know you stuff. YES. So, tell me about yourself, or something. Why did you decide to switch to Yorkwood?" Marz was genuinely curious about this one - Marz was surprisingly passionate about her school. She didn't like the learning or anything, and especially not the homework, but she loved the atmosphere, and was always angry when Yorkwood was referred to as "Weedwood" - just because they had one major-league drug dealer didn't mean that they were all on drugs. Their school wasn't a Weezer song.

Kitty took the gum, and slid it into her mouth. She chewed for a moment until it morphed into the chewy texture, and as she did so Marz placed her question.
"Well, I wasn't the one to choose. My grandparents did, not that they really had a choice either. My old school was closed down because the headmaster was an asshole who was caught dealing drugs. He was probably on them too, but they never told us that." She caught herself cursing, and silently scolded herself. She had been doing well keeping this habit controlled so far. "Sorry, bad habit.." She apologized, blushing a little. Great impression. "But, even if it wasn't my choice, Yorkwood seems nice enough. Why did you come here?" She asked, curious as well.

Marz couldn't help but raise her eyebrows at the "principle dealing drugs" comment. Maybe it was because she was so used to Lub, but she just couldn't picture any principle doing drugs - but that was probably because of Lub... Like, Lub, every Friday afternoon, as the students left the school would say "lve you all. make good choices". Whatever. It was a pretty alien idea to poor sheltered Marz. "Haha it's okay - I swear a lot Well, actually, not so much anymore, but I used to. I'm a bit less angry at the world now. Umm... I chose to come here because, well, Junior High ended, obviously, and I remember I was at the KFC just down the street with my mom, and she was blabbering about me having to go to some preppy private school, and I saw Yorkwood, and asked questions about us, and we didn't seem half as preppy as any of the other schools. I mean, we have Lub. How preppy can we be?" Marz grinned, her idolization of Lub obvious - he was a man that no one in the school hated. Not the druggies, not the jocks, not anyone. He just had such a great personality & was loved by all.
"Next get to know you question... what music are you into?" Marz tended to judge people by their music, so this was a heavily weighted question for her.

Kitty laughed, seeing her reaction to the drugs issue. "It wasn't a good school." She offered. She grinned as Marz admitted to swearing as well, feeling a little less stupid for it. She, though, couldn't say she swore any less then she ever had. It had become so natural to her. She barely ever realized when she did it. She just assumed that the kids that went to such a high-end school like Yorkwood wouldn't use the vulgar language she was used too. But, she was proved wrong. She laughed at the preppy statement with Lub. Apparently all the kids thought him to be great...Maybe it came with time?
Music. One of Kitty's favorite subjects. She loved music that got her going, and for her, it was rap. Most people responded negatively to her choice of music. But honestly, how can you not get sucked into it? The beats were so creative and fiery. They made her feel so free; music was her therapy. She went to it went she was angry, sad, even happy...mostly angry. "Usually rap...sometimes country." This was true. Her grandmother loved country, and Kitty didn't mind it. She decided against lying to Marz. If she didn't like Kitty's choice of music, that was her problem. Kitty couldn't help who she was. And rap music was a part of her, she loved it even if she had never heard the song before.

Marz nodded, with slight relief at the "not a good school" statement - because of the way that Marz's parents were, she had led a pretty sheltered life - always in private school from junior kindergarten onwards so because of that, she had never really gotten a glance at the "real world" until the year before when she had met people that used to go tp public school and had been thrust into a totally new world, which she actually liked, for all that she still went to a private school.
"Rap's cool."' Marz admitted. Rap wasn't her favourite genre, she preferred folk-punk and ska, but it was without a doubt in her top five "Who are your favourite artists? I think Tupac's still king, so he's by far my favourite... Any old school-er really is. The sell-outs I'm not so fond of but they're still cool." That's why so many people liked Marz, at least when they first met her - she knew /a lot/ about music and had something positive to say about pretty much every genre of it.

Kitty grinned. "I don't really have a favorite. I guess Eminem's cool. And all the new rappers who keep coming out with good songs." First she laughed at herself. For someone who limits herself to one genre of music, there were no limits within that genre. Then she laughed at the old-school comment. She really couldn't stand older music. She didn't know why. Maybe it was just because she was so used to everyone around her not liking it either, she never really had a chance to attempt to enjoy it...I doubt she would though. Her interests were limited to specific areas. In this way, she was the total opposite of Marz. This made her rather difficult to get along with at first. She Kitty can learn to be flexible with her likes. It takes time to really get to know her, but she'll learn.

Marz grinned at Kitty "Well then - I'll have to get to work at boardening your music horizions, if you're okay with that. I tend to be good at matching different genres of music with people's personalities. If you ever need a mixtape for a boy, I'm for sure here." she smiled happily. Sure, Kitty had a kindof limited music scope, but she liked rap, which Marz did - from there they were bound to find something to go on and build a friendship on.
"So this is the cafeteria - but we call it "The Lodge". The food here is pretty garbage so most people go off-campus for it - you have a card for purchases in here - we'll go to the office and pick it up later. Any questions about Yorkwood in general? I'm having trouble finding things to go on here." Marz grinned sheepishly - starting conversations wasn't one of her strong points, which made her wonder why teachers had thought she would make a good sponsor.

Kitty grinned at her sponsor. "That might be a challenge for you, but I probably need it." She guessed it could be interesting to listen to some other music...Right?
Kitty laughed when Marz mentioned the food. She had sort of been expecting the expensive school to have good cafeteria food. Another thing she had overestimates. She thought the idea of a card seemed pretty cool. Kitty grinned as Marz asked if she had any questions. She was obviously just as incompetent at making conversation, but she decided to try her best to help out. "Umm...well, what courses are offered?" Kitty laughed at her next question, "And which ones are any good?"
